BREAKFAST RUN TO THE DROS, SILVER LAKES, PRETORIA
Sunday 28th February 2010
Yup – you are reading it correctly. We never made it to the Springbok Bar (previously the Foundry Fly) - again - because it had apparently floundered, or pronked off in another direction, as Eric discovered whilst doing a recce of the venue last week. It is no more! So we went next door to the Dros instead.
Pace Setter : Eric
Pack Leader : Al
Sweep : Des
Biker Buddies : Clifford, Herman and Lyn (who jumped in to help as the two who were supposed to be on duty this weekend have both resigned)
The ride was delayed by a few minutes because Lyn’s footrest fell off at the Dealership. Talk about good karma? Couldn’t have happened at a better venue now, could it? After sitting on the bike and yelling for help for about 10 minutes - willing Willie eventually rushed to my assistance and specially opened up the workshop (on a Sunday, nogal), placing the bike on the lift.
20 minutes later it was reattached and a very relieved Lyn could join the pack for the breakfast run once more. Thank you so much Willie. Your help was greatly appreciated. Panic over. Not! Another young Buell rider was experiencing problems with his back wheel. After getting the “all clear” he took up his position in the pack and the patient group eventually left the dealership. The weather was absolutely perfect. That big yellow disk that has been so conspicuous by its absence was once again shining brightly in the blue sky above the Highveld. Welcome back Sun!
The route then went down South Road and into Marlborough Drive (No! You have got to be kidding me?). Then onto the N3 South and off at Edenvale. Onto Modderfontein Road and through to Esselin Park. Then it was a great free lesson in pothole avoidance on the backroads north to Silver Lakes and eventually finding the Dros and filling ravenous tummies. A total of 70 kms - even though it felt like a 100 kms. A really nice turn out of 46 bikes and almost 70 people. This caused quite a few long delays at the breakfast table. Some folk wisely changed their orders to lunch!
Three Biker Buddies on duty - and three minor incidences. All sorted! Thank you Biker Buddies!
The Marshalls did an excellent job of showing us the route on the big screen beforehand, but somehow it all went a little haywire and parts of the pack “got lost” thanks to the Honorary Chairman of the Wherethefukarwi Tribe – Eric! Marshall Chris used his “manual” GPS at each intersection (the newspaper vendors) - by asking “Eishhh, which way did that big group of people on bikes go?”
A very big and sincere thank you to Mo for stepping in at the last minute to help with the New Owners Ride to Amazingwe on Saturday. We know you had something else planned for the morning. You embody the true spirit of Biker Buddies and can give yourself a huge pat on the back for your dedication and enthusiasm. Your efforts have not gone unnoticed!
Until next weekend then, ride hard and ride safe!
Lyn
PS: Only in South Africa ……do we leave cars worth hundreds of thousands of rands in the driveway and put our useless junk in the garage.
PPS: Why are they called apartments when they are all stuck together?
PPPS: If flying is so safe, why do they call the airport the terminal? |
