Breakfast Run to Stonehaven on vaal
11th April 2010
With so many Club members away in Milwaukee for POT training, or already suffering from the dreaded autumn green flu lurgies, a small pack was expected on the Breakfast Run this morning. That and the fact that the ride was 105 kms one way. So it was really pleasing to see 35 riders all eager to jump on a hearty plate of breakfast…just like a fat kid on a cupcake! Well done to Stanley who organized the venue today and to Danny D. for the full on recce. A job well done guys! You sure can “google” to get there and “oggle” once you are there.
A nice long ride into the country on such a beautiful day is always appreciated by those riders keen to pile on the kilo’s (on their bikes and around their waistbands). Hungry bikers don’t need any encouragement to devour hearty breakfasts. We just have to be careful not to turn into Chunky Monkeys! (Oh sh#t! Too late… I hear you groaning)! The gently curving roads, (thankfully still covered with tar at this point in time) and flanked by woolly sheep, fat happy cows and pretty cosmos, were a refreshing sight from the taxis and road rage in the city - and the green fields speckled with hundreds of big brown hay bales were really fascinating - just like freckles on the face of a red haired girl.
Unfortunately the venue seemed to be plagued by a couple of gremlins today - the electricity kept tripping and so the queues for the English Breakfast were very long. Lots of moaning from disgruntled patrons. Probably the ones who live in the area and have absolutely nothing else to do except go to Stonehaven to eat on the weekends. With the staff becoming flustered and agitated, was a sure way to ensure that they ran out of tea, coffee and juice (included in the breakfast) before everyone had got theirs. And then of course nobody knew where to find the stocks to replenish the buffet table.
PaceSetter : Danny D.
Leader of the Pack : Kevin K.
Sweep : Wayne D.
Biker Buddies on duty : Hilary H. and Mike E.
Welcome back Hilary. Good to see you back on the bike again!
The Route : down South Road and onto the highway all the way to Walkerville (R557). Then onto the Rand Vaal Road where the large, but orderly, pack turned onto the R59 (Sybrand van Niekerk). The pack then took the Barrage Road exit and turned left onto the R57 Golden Highway. Another exit was taken at Ravel Road. Turned left into Vaal Drive and again left into the road leading to a very busy Stonehaven.
Mention must be made here that both Danny and Warren’s brakes work really, really well.
Please note that if you are keen to have the action photograph that was taken of yourself on your bike today, then come to the next Hog Nite, join us for a drink and view yourself on the big screen. Bring in your own disc and the photo can then be downloaded for you. Almost every rider was photographed in action today, and who doesn’t want a great coloured photograph of themselves on their shiny pride and joy?
Don’t forget to help the JOH Lady Marshalls (Elma and Lyn) raise much needed funds for the Journey of Hope Cancer Survivors Ride from Durban to Cape Town taking place in October. Every rand counts at this stage and will help save a life. Come on folks - show us your generous sides!
Have a great week everyone. Ride hard and ride safe. See you on the next Breakfast Run.
