Breakfast Run to Out of Africa Game Lodge, Haartebeespoort
18th April 2010
Well it seems like the small volcanic eruption in Iceland has caused some chaos in SA too. Not many Marshalls were available on the Breakfast Run today as many are apparently stuck on other continents waiting for flights back to SA. Can you imagine what’s going to happen when Yellowstone National Park eventually erupts? The whole world will come to a complete standstill. Hopefully the Marshalls will make it back in time now for Africa Bike Week in Margate?
Just when you think things are running smoothly at last, life throws you yet another curve ball. But “Boer maak ‘n plan” and the three Marshalls who were on duty today did an excellent job. Thanks Dennis D., Warren and Farrell. They had to work overtime as the pack was much larger than anticipated too.

The route was one of the nicest we have ridden for a long time - no freeway riding and all lovely, long, winding country roads with the warm autumn sun heating the dusty 78 km route, almost all pothole free. A good turnout of 37 bikes made it all worthwhile for the hard work Karl had put in.
We left the bustling dealership (on time) after waking ourselves up properly with Fanie’s hot, filter coffee and headed down Rivonia, Bryanston Drive, Cedar Road, intersection just before Lanseria - took a left and went in a small loop passed the Cradle of Human Kind, Rhino and Lion Park, then back on the road to Harties, over the bridge, Cosmos, left at the 4 way stop and then passed the Harties Village Market, and into the venue. A few heart stopping moments for some of the riders when the inspiring and regal black entrance gates rolled back slowly, only to reveal a long, loose gravel and sandy road.
Our friendly photographer drove ahead of us after leaving the dealership so he could get some “action” photographs of the bikers and their bikes, only to be confused with other larger packs from Clearwater and Pretoria at the same intersections heading in opposite directions and so folks - we lost him for about 2 hours. He eventually arrived at the Out of Africa Game Lodge long after everyone had finished eating their breakfasts.
His excuse was that the other packs were all smiling and waving at him, and so he thought it just had to be us??? He then entered a speed trap near Amazingwe and was (erroneously of course) pulled over and fined.
A couple of dirt bikes and quads saw the speed trap and immediately veered off the road and onto the dirt at the side of the road. One Scrambler owner gave the camera and the cops the middle finger salute when passing, only to promptly and indignantly fall off and get up close and personal with the hard ground. Bad karma Dude. So all in all not a very pleasant day for him, or our photographer, under the circumstances.
Next week everyone and his uncle are heading down to Margate and Africa Bike Week. Ride safely and have a blast folks. We hope you make lots of new friends and great memories.
